AI Clinical Trial Matching Engineer

About the role

Matching patients to clinical trials is a needle-in-a-haystack problem multiplied by regulatory complexity. There are 450,000 active trials globally, each with inclusion/exclusion criteria written in dense medical jargon. A single patient's eligibility depends on dozens of variables buried across lab results, imaging reports, and physician notes. Manual matching takes 2 hours per patient; our NLP system does it in 8 seconds. The 8-second version isn't good enough yet. It catches 82% of eligible trials but misses edge cases where criteria are ambiguous or contradictory across trial sites. You'll improve the extraction pipeline that parses eligibility criteria into structured rules, build the matching engine that evaluates patient records against those rules, and handle the messy reality of medical data where the same condition has 15 different names. The engineering team is seven people. You'll work alongside a clinical informaticist who validates your outputs against real patient cases and a regulatory specialist who ensures your system meets FDA guidance on AI-assisted trial matching.

Responsibilities

  • Improve NLP extraction of eligibility criteria from clinical trial protocols
  • Build and refine the patient-trial matching engine
  • Handle medical terminology normalization across different coding systems
  • Validate matching accuracy against clinician-reviewed ground truth
  • Integrate with EHR data sources for patient record ingestion
  • Maintain compliance with healthcare data handling requirements

Requirements

  • 3+ years in NLP engineering with experience in healthcare or biomedical text
  • Familiarity with medical ontologies: SNOMED, ICD-10, or MedDRA
  • Experience with Hugging Face transformers for text extraction tasks
  • Strong Python skills with production deployment experience
  • Comfort working within HIPAA-compliant development environments
