About the role

When a dashboard number looks wrong, the first question is always 'where does this data come from?' Data lineage answers that question — tracing every metric back through transformations, joins, and source systems to the raw data that generated it. Without lineage, debugging a bad number takes days of detective work. As a junior data lineage tracker, you'll help maintain the lineage graph: parsing SQL transformations to extract data flow relationships, validating lineage connections against actual pipeline behavior, and building the search interface that lets analysts trace any metric back to its source tables in seconds. Data lineage is infrastructure work that everyone appreciates when it's done well. You'll develop deep familiarity with how enterprise data moves from source systems through transformation layers to analytics dashboards — knowledge that makes you valuable in any data engineering role.

Responsibilities

  • Parse SQL transformations to extract data flow relationships for lineage graphs
  • Validate lineage connections against actual pipeline execution behavior
  • Build search interfaces for metric-to-source tracing
  • Monitor lineage graph completeness and flag undocumented data flows
  • Assist senior engineers with lineage automation tool development

Requirements

  • Python and SQL proficiency for pipeline analysis
