AI Depth Estimation Engineer

About the role

Estimating depth from a single 2D image is one of those problems that humans do effortlessly and computers do terribly — until recently. Modern monocular depth models produce surprisingly accurate depth maps, and we use them to power our AR interior design platform. Snap a photo of your living room, and our app lets you place virtual furniture with accurate scale and occlusion. The depth models work well in controlled conditions, but our users take photos in every lighting condition imaginable: dark rooms, harsh backlighting, reflective surfaces, cluttered spaces with 50 objects competing for attention. You'll help improve depth estimation quality across these edge cases, build the evaluation pipeline that tracks accuracy metrics across our test image set, and integrate improved models into our mobile inference stack. This is a junior role where you'll learn computer vision by working on a real product with 800,000 monthly active users. Your senior teammate has been refining the depth pipeline for two years and will guide your onboarding. Expect to read a lot of papers and implement a lot of ideas — some will work, most won't, and learning to tell the difference quickly is the skill we'll help you develop.

Responsibilities

  • Improve monocular depth estimation quality for challenging indoor scenes
  • Build and maintain evaluation pipelines for depth accuracy metrics
  • Implement and benchmark depth model architectures from recent papers
  • Integrate improved models into the mobile inference pipeline
  • Curate and expand the test image dataset with diverse conditions
  • Document experiment results and contribute to model selection decisions

Requirements

  • 1+ year working with computer vision or deep learning in Python
  • Familiarity with PyTorch and convolutional neural network architectures
  • Basic understanding of depth estimation or 3D vision concepts
  • Ability to read and implement ideas from ML research papers
  • Interest in mobile or embedded deployment is a plus
