About the role

Insurance claims processing runs on forms: ACORD forms, CMS-1500s, UB-04s, custom state-specific variants. Our clients process 40,000 form submissions per month, and 30% still require manual data entry because the forms arrive as scanned images, PDFs, or photos taken on phones in bad lighting. This is a 6-month contract role focused on one thing: reducing manual entry through better extraction automation. You'll improve the post-OCR parsing pipeline that maps raw text to structured fields, handle the common failure modes — rotated documents, faded ink, handwritten corrections — and add support for 5 new form types that our top clients use. You'll work directly under our senior document engineer who built the current system and knows where every edge case lives. This is a great role for someone early in their career who wants to get hands-on with production NLP on real-world messy data.

Responsibilities

  • Improve extraction accuracy for structured form fields across document types
  • Handle common failure modes: rotation, faded text, handwritten annotations
  • Add extraction support for 5 new insurance form types
  • Build validation rules to catch and flag extraction errors pre-delivery
  • Write regression tests to prevent accuracy degradation on fixed cases
  • Document extraction patterns for knowledge transfer

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python development experience
  • Basic understanding of OCR, text parsing, or regular expressions
  • Comfort working with messy, real-world document data
  • Attention to detail and systematic debugging approach
  • Willingness to learn document AI techniques on the job
