AI Ocean Plastic Debris Tracking Engineer

About the role

Ocean plastic cleanup crews currently rely on outdated aerial surveys to decide where to send boats, which wastes fuel and misses fresh debris fields entirely. We're looking for someone to fix that with satellite and drone imagery. You will build a computer vision pipeline that detects and tracks floating plastic debris fields from satellite and drone footage, feeding coordinates directly into cleanup crew routing tools. We believe AI should work for environmental causes with real, measurable impact, not just for ad optimization. You'll join a small team of three engineers, report directly to our lead computer vision scientist, and have real input into which imagery sources we prioritize next.

Responsibilities

  • Build detection models for floating debris in satellite imagery
  • Track debris field movement across successive image captures
  • Feed detection output into the cleanup crew routing tool
  • Evaluate new imagery sources for coverage and cost
  • Support the lead scientist on model validation

Requirements

  • 1-2 years of experience with computer vision projects
  • Familiarity with PyTorch and image preprocessing
  • Comfortable working with satellite or drone imagery
  • Genuine interest in environmental applications of AI
