Junior AI Carrier Rate Benchmarking Analyst

Miles Andersen

Freelance · Job · Chicago

About the role

Shippers negotiate freight rates with carriers, but without benchmark data they negotiate blind — accepting rates that feel competitive without knowing whether they're actually in the market range. Carrier rate benchmarking answers the question: for this lane, this service level, and this freight profile, what are comparable shippers actually paying? That benchmark is the leverage that turns a rate negotiation from a guess into an informed conversation. We process logistics data for 85 shippers and 3PLs. Carrier rate benchmarking is a new analytics product we're building to sit alongside our routing and optimization tools. We have the transaction data — we process $2B in carrier invoices annually — but we haven't built the benchmarking analytics layer that converts that transaction history into comparative market intelligence. This is a freelance role — 20 hours per week. You'll build the data pipelines and benchmark computation logic under senior analyst supervision. Your work: lane-level rate aggregation, freight profile normalization that makes rates comparable across different shipment characteristics, and the benchmark reporting interface that shippers use in their carrier review conversations.

Responsibilities

  • Build lane-level rate aggregation from carrier invoice transaction history across shipper network
  • Implement freight profile normalization making rates comparable across weight, distance, and service level dimensions
  • Create benchmark percentile computation giving shippers their rate position relative to comparable lanes
  • Develop carrier rate trend tracking monitoring whether market rates are rising or falling by lane category
  • Build benchmark reporting interface for shipper carrier review and negotiation preparation
  • Maintain pipeline as new carrier data sources and lane definitions are added

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python and SQL development experience
  • Basic familiarity with logistics, freight, or transportation data preferred
  • Interest in supply chain analytics, market intelligence, or pricing data
  • Attention to data normalization accuracy in rate comparison calculations
  • Reliable async communication for a remote freelance engagement

Benefits

  • Fully remote freelance — 20 hours per week
  • Flexible schedule
  • Competitive hourly rate
