About the role

Cloud workloads have a carbon footprint that varies significantly based on which region they run in, what time of day they run, and which cloud provider is used. A workload running on AWS us-east-1 during peak demand hours has a higher carbon intensity than the same workload on GCP europe-west1 during off-peak hours. For companies with Scope 2 and Scope 3 carbon commitments, understanding and optimizing the carbon footprint of their cloud infrastructure is increasingly a board-level priority. Our FinOps platform helps 55 enterprise clients manage their cloud costs. Carbon footprint tracking is a new product dimension: we want to add carbon intensity to cost reporting so clients can see not just what their workloads cost in dollars but what they cost in CO2-equivalent. This is a freelance role — 20-25 hours per week — to build the carbon tracking data pipeline. You'll integrate regional carbon intensity data sources (Electricity Maps API, cloud provider emissions APIs), build the per-workload carbon intensity computation, and create the carbon footprint dashboards that sustainability teams use alongside the cost dashboards.

Fully remote.

Responsibilities

  • Build carbon intensity data ingestion from Electricity Maps API and cloud provider emissions endpoints
  • Implement per-workload carbon footprint computation from resource usage and regional carbon intensity
  • Create multi-cloud carbon footprint aggregation across AWS, GCP, and Azure deployments
  • Develop carbon footprint dashboards for sustainability team reporting alongside cost data
  • Build carbon trend alerts when workload carbon intensity increases significantly
  • Maintain pipeline as new regions and cloud services are added to carbon intensity data sources

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python and SQL development experience
  • Basic familiarity with data pipelines and APIs
  • Interest in sustainability, FinOps, or cloud infrastructure
  • Attention to unit accuracy in carbon intensity calculations
  • Reliable async communication for a remote freelance engagement

Benefits

  • Fully remote freelance across EU time zones — 20-25 hours per week
  • Flexible schedule
  • Competitive hourly rate
  • Exposure to sustainability data infrastructure
  • Potential to expand into full-time carbon product role
