About the role

Our clinical documentation and discharge summary tools are trusted by hospital partners, but nursing shift handoff notes remain a manual, time-pressured task that often loses important detail between shifts. You will help build a summarization tool that condenses nursing handoff notes into a structured, scannable format, preserving critical patient status changes while cutting reading time for the incoming shift. You'll work under a senior healthcare NLP engineer, learning how clinical text processing works in a regulated environment while contributing real improvements from your first weeks.

Responsibilities

  • Help build a summarization tool condensing nursing shift handoff notes
  • Support evaluation of generated summaries against nurse-reviewed ground truth
  • Assist with building training data from de-identified handoff note samples
  • Document summarization failure cases for the senior NLP team
  • Pair with a senior healthcare NLP engineer on model architecture decisions

Requirements

  • Some Python and NLP coursework or personal project experience
  • Interest in healthcare technology and clinical documentation
  • Comfortable working with sensitive, regulated text data
  • Eagerness to learn from a senior healthcare NLP team
