Junior AI Pedestrian Flow Density Modeling Developer

Skylar Moreau

Freelance · Job · Chicago

About the role

Understanding how pedestrians move through urban spaces — where they concentrate, when density peaks, what routes they prefer, and where flows create safety risks — is essential for urban planning, event management, and public safety. Pedestrian flow density modeling from sensor data: foot traffic counters, Bluetooth detection, mobile device anonymized signals, and camera-based counting provides the quantitative foundation for those decisions. This is a freelance role — 20 hours per week. We build location intelligence products for 22 smart city and urban planning clients. Pedestrian flow density modeling is a new analytics product we're developing for municipal clients who manage parks, transit hubs, and public spaces. We have the sensor data ingestion — the work is building the modeling layer that converts raw pedestrian count time series into density maps, flow direction estimates, and capacity threshold alerts. As a junior developer, you'll build the pedestrian flow data processing pipelines under senior analyst guidance: aggregating count time series by location and time, computing spatial density estimates from distributed counting sensor networks, and building the flow monitoring dashboard that urban planners use to understand pedestrian demand patterns in managed spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Build pedestrian count time series aggregation from distributed foot traffic sensor networks
  • Implement spatial density estimation computing pedestrian density maps from sensor coverage networks
  • Develop capacity threshold monitoring alerting when pedestrian density exceeds safe capacity levels
  • Create flow pattern analysis identifying peak hours, seasonal variation, and event-driven demand spikes
  • Build pedestrian flow monitoring dashboard for urban planner and event manager consumption
  • Maintain pipeline as new sensor types and pedestrian counting data sources are integrated

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python and SQL development experience
  • Basic familiarity with geospatial data or time-series processing preferred
  • Interest in urban analytics, smart city technology, or location intelligence
  • Attention to sensor data quality and spatial aggregation accuracy
  • Reliable async communication for a freelance engagement

Benefits

  • Fully remote freelance — 20 hours per week
  • Flexible schedule
  • Competitive hourly rate
  • Exposure to smart city data infrastructure
  • Mentorship from senior urban analytics engineers
