About the role

A regulation rarely exists in isolation. GDPR Article 17 references Article 6 for its lawful basis conditions. The FDA's 21 CFR Part 11 electronic records rule is cross-referenced in dozens of guidance documents. A change in one regulation may cascade through a network of cross-references affecting dozens of compliance controls. Mapping these reference networks manually is hours of legal research per regulatory change. We automate compliance workflows for 85 regulated companies across healthcare, financial services, and manufacturing. Regulatory cross-reference mapping — automatically identifying which regulatory provisions reference each other and building the dependency graph — is the foundation for our impact analysis capabilities. When a regulation changes, we need to know which other regulations, internal policies, and compliance controls it touches. As a junior developer, you'll build and maintain the cross-reference extraction pipeline. Senior engineers design the semantic matching methodology; you implement the document parsing, the citation pattern extraction, and the graph construction that turns extracted references into a navigable regulatory dependency map. You'll work with compliance specialists who'll tell you when the mapping is correct and when it's missing connections.

Responsibilities

  • Build document parsing pipeline extracting regulatory citations and cross-references from compliance documents
  • Implement citation pattern extraction for diverse regulatory document formats and citation styles
  • Construct regulatory dependency graphs connecting referencing and referenced provisions
  • Create pipeline updates when new regulatory documents or amendments are published
  • Build cross-reference search interface for compliance team exploration
  • Monitor graph completeness and accuracy with compliance specialist review feedback

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python and SQL development experience
  • Basic familiarity with text processing and document parsing
  • Interest in compliance technology, legal tech, or regulatory automation
  • Attention to extraction accuracy in documents with consequential compliance implications
  • Good communication skills for collaborating with compliance domain experts
