AI Tactile Sensing Integration Engineer

Riley Magnusson

Full-time · Job · Los_Angeles

About the role

Vision tells a robot what to pick up. Touch tells it whether the grasp is working. Our manipulation platforms have achieved high grasp success rates on rigid objects, but soft, deformable, and fragile objects — produce, electronics, medical devices — require tactile feedback that vision alone can't provide. We've instrumented our latest gripper generation with high-resolution tactile sensors, and now we need to teach the robot to use what it feels. You'll build the tactile perception and control integration layer: processing raw tactile sensor signals (pressure distribution, shear force, vibration) into grasp quality estimates, developing slip detection algorithms that trigger reactive control adjustments before an object drops, and integrating tactile feedback into the motion planning loop that currently relies exclusively on visual feedback. The role is hybrid — 2 days per week in our Redwood City robotics lab for hardware experiments with the gripper testbeds, 3 days remote. You'll join the manipulation team of seven, taking ownership of the tactile sensing pipeline that no one currently owns.

Responsibilities

  • Build tactile signal processing pipeline from raw sensor data to grasp quality estimates
  • Develop slip detection algorithms triggering reactive grasp adjustment
  • Integrate tactile feedback into the existing visual manipulation control pipeline
  • Design training data collection protocols for tactile-based manipulation skills
  • Evaluate tactile integration impact on success rates for deformable object grasping
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers on sensor calibration and noise characterization

Requirements

  • 3+ years in robotics ML or tactile/haptic sensing research
  • Experience with tactile sensor processing or contact-rich manipulation
  • Strong Python and PyTorch skills with time series and signal processing knowledge
  • Familiarity with robot operating systems and real-time control integration
  • Comfort working with physical hardware in a lab environment

Benefits

  • Hybrid: 2 days Redwood City lab, 3 days remote
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • $3,000 annual hardware and conference budget
  • Equity participation
  • Access to state-of-the-art robotic manipulation hardware
